What is the Probus Club?

A Social meeting for retired PROfessional and BUSiness men.

The Kingswood Club was the first in this district, (and the first to have a web site, June 2001)  and was formed in 1973. It meets on the second Thursday of each month when we  have a coffee morning (usually with a speaker).   On the fourth Thursday we have a luncheon meeting, ( also with a speaker).   In the months with a fifth Thursday, we include our ladies for coffee.    At most meetings our speakers talk on a wide range of subjects, followed by questions and discussions.

THE COMMITTEES.

CLUB SERVICE. Under the chairmanship of the Vice-President.  Organises the running of the club, the speakers, its finances, and the Induction Lunch, and Special Lunches, when our ladies are invited.

OUTINGS.

Arranges a holiday each Spring and Autumn for members and their ladies, together with coach and boat trips, and pub lunches.

SOCIAL.

Arranges trips to the theatre, skittles matches, and social events. Organises OUR BOWLS team in the Probus League. Responsible for an Autumn Craft and Garden competition whenever planned

WELFARE.

Keeps a watching brief over sick or absent members, and the widows of deceased members, "Friends of Probus", who are invited to most events, and to an outing and lunch each summer.

The committee Chairmen report to the Club Council at a meeting every two months, where final decisions are made.

MEMBERSHIP.

The only qualification is that all members are retired PROfessional or BUSinessmen. The club is non-religious and non-sectarian. Members should be able to give regular attendance, and attend some of the events organised on their behalf. Numbers are limited to around 56 to ensure a good social atmosphere.  There is an application form available, which should be completed, with the support of an existing member.  A small sub-committee will interview the applicant and, if agreed, will recommend him for approval by the Council, before membership is granted.   Then follows an induction ceremony by the President, at a convenient meeting, when the sponsor will introduce the person to the members.

THE COST.

The club is run at minimum cost. Membership is at present £15 per annum (2006). Coffee mornings cost £2.50. (2006),   and lunch meetings £10.00 (2006).  There is a speaker at most meetings. There is no joining fee.  Social events are charged  to cover their costs.

INTERESTED?

If you live in the area, can attend on a regular basis on Thursdays, and are "young" at heart, and "active", then why not come along and try us, by invitation. Contact the Secretary, or any member, or the Webmaster, who will obtain membership application forms.
